An author I am currently reading, Jennifer Grant Haworth, asks us to consider the imagery of the Mississippi river and the deep undercurrent that moves it along to the ocean. On the surface are crosscurrents that push about aimlessly, willfully swirling about on the surface. Many of us, without knowing, are caught here, expending our energies, going nowhere, exhausted, unfulfilled. However, taking the time to consider a deeper current, and willingly living into that force, is what discernment is all about. "Pushing the pause button" and asking, Whose life am I living? Am I stuck in the crosscurrents? What life wants to live in me? This is the work of discernment.
What is that deep current that is calling you to leave the shore, forget the crosscurrents, to dive down and be taken? Are you caught in the whirlpools of willfulness, struggling to define your life, or are you willingly living into a deeper current, allowing your life to speak, to listen, to live its true calling in you?
